What do you do when life is full of inconsistency and upheaval. Why go to the gardens of course!
Instead of fretting about our lack of child care, my imminent and possibly delayed return to work, kindergarten starting a week late and mourning the loss of a Canadian institution (first Mr. Rogers now this!) we packed up and headed out to enjoy the glorious day in one of our favourite places, just 20 minutes from home.
One of the best things we did when William was a baby was to buy a family membership to Van Dusen botanical gardens. We have kept it up for almost five years now and it feels like a home away from home. I feel calm when I am here. It’s a place to forget our worries, where there is no traffic noise, no dog poop, no cigarette butts and no drug paraphernalia. We can just romp in the grass, smell the flowers and scramble over the sculptures. There are always surprises – a turtle burying her eggs in the grass, baby ducks in the pond, a multitude of fairy lights at Christmas and today there was a fantastic surprise waiting for us. It was like a magic kingdom with a new and unexpected treasure waiting around every corner. Lovely!
